How to Crochet a Scarf With Pictures
If you have a basic understanding of crochet stitches, you can crochet a scarf. Determine how wide you want your scarf to be, then work back and forth in short rows along this desired width until you each the length you want. Alternatively, decide how long you want your scarf to be first. Then crochet your stitches along the length of your scarf instead, stopping when the width of the scarf meets your satisfaction.

1
Make a series of chain stitches to form the foundation row of your scarf. To work the scarf in short rows along its width, make the length of chain stitches equal to your desired scarf width, plus one extra chain for your turning chain.
-
2
Use single crochet stitches to give your scarf a dense fabric. Make a single crochet stitch in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across. Check the width of your work. If you want the scarf to be wider, unravel your work and add more chains to your starting chain stitches; if you want the scarf to be narrower, unravel and start with fewer chain stitches.

Use variegated yarn to make a multicolored scarf without changing skeins. Chain one stitch and turn your work. Make one single crochet in every stitch across to complete the second row.
-
4
Add new colors of yarn every few rows to make a rainbow scarf. Continue the pattern of chaining one, turning your work, and working single crochets across the row until you run out of yarn or your scarf is as long as you want it to be. Make a slip stitch to finish off your work. Cut your working yarn and use a large eye blunt needle to weave in the ends.

5
Put fringe on the ends of your scarf to give it a traditional look. Add fringe to the ends of your scarf, if desired. Cut 40 strips of yarn, each 6 inches long. Hold two yarn lengths together and bend them in half, then use your crochet hook to pull that bent portion through the end stitches of your scarf. Pull the ends of the yarn lengths through the center loop to tighten the fringe. Repeat across one short end of the scarf and then the other. Use 20 lengths of yarn on each end.
