How to Clean Up a Gun Powder Spill With the Vacuum Cleaner

It is safe to vacuum gun powder.

Gun powder is commonly spilled while trying to reload a gun. The most effective way to clean gun powder is by sweeping it. However, if gun powder is spilled into carpet, a vacuum cleaner may need to be used. There are many rumors that vacuuming gun powder can cause a spark and lead to fire, or worse yet, cause an explosion. However, there is no proof that this has ever occurred and no studies have ever backed up this claim.

Things You'll Need

• Broom or hand broom
• Dust pan
• Vacuum cleaner

Instructions

1. Sweep up as much of the gun powder as possible using a broom or hand broom. Sweep the pile of gun powder into a dust pan. Safely dispose of the gun powder.

2. Vacuum the area where the gun powder was spilled. Run the vacuum cleaner over the area at least two to three times to ensure all of the gun powder is removed.

3. Remove the contents in the vacuum bag or canister. Safely dispose of the contents.

Tips & Warnings

• Prior to loading a gun or using gun powder, place a tarp or old blanket underneath you to catch all of the gunpowder that may fall.
