Homemade Gift Card Envelopes
Rather than using the traditional little, white envelopes, add some color that enhances or matches the gift wrap or ribbon. Gift card envelopes made from felt or burlap make a useful gift that won't be thrown away with the gift wrap. The envelope size you make will depend on the size of the card you are using. Most gift cards are very small, but they can be made in any size.

1
Determine what size envelope you need to make by measuring the size of the card. The envelope should be just slightly larger than the card.
-
2
Cut rectangular pieces of burlap that are a half-inch wider than the card and twice as long. Bring the bottom edge up one card length so that it is one inch from the top of the envelope and secure it with a straight pin. The envelope should now be a quarter to a half-inch wider and longer than the card.

3
Sew a row of stitches up both sides and across the top of the envelope flap. The stitches across the top flap will keep the threads of the burlap from unraveling. These can easily be sewn by hand, if you prefer. One row of straight stitches should be sufficient.
-
4
Fold the top edge of the envelope down. Attach a Velcro dot to the inside of the flap and on the matching spot on the front of the envelope. If the burlap does not lay as flat as you would like, press it with an iron so the fold stays in place.

5
To attach the envelope to the gift, insert a piece of ribbon or cord in the top corner of the envelope. Push it through an opening in the burlap fabric of the envelope's top flap and through the back of the envelope itself. A 5- or 6-inch piece of burlap thread unraveled from the edge of another piece of burlap also could be used to attach the envelope to the gift.
