How to Delete Windows ME & Install Windows XP
The Windows Millennium Edition (ME) operating system was the successor to Windows 98. If Windows ME is running on your computer, you can delete it anytime to install and upgrade to a new operating system, such as Windows XP. In order to install Windows XP, you must have a Windows XP installation CD. Before you remove Windows ME from your computer, make sure you have all important files and programs backed up.

Uninstall Windows ME

Close all windows and programs. Click on the "Start" button from the desktop and move your mouse over the "Settings" option.

Click "Control Panel," then click "Add/Remove Programs."

Click the "Install/Uninstall" tab, then click the "Uninstall Windows Millennium Edition" option.

Double-click the "Uninstall Windows Millennium Edition" option, then click "Yes." Click the "Yes" option at the ScanDisk check prompt.

Click "Yes" to reboot your computer. The uninstallation process will continue, and Windows ME will be removed from your computer.
Install Windows XP

Insert a Windows XP installation disc into the CD-ROM drive of your computer.

Click the "Start" button from the desktop, then click the "Shut Down" button. Click the "Restart" button to restart your computer.

Press any key on your computer when you see the "Press any key to boot from CD" message appear on the screen.

Press the "Enter" key on your keyboard at the "Welcome to Setup" screen. Press the "F8" key to agree to the license terms.

Click on the "Install" option from the Installation screen and allow time for the installation process to complete. Your computer will restart, and Windows XP will be installed.
