How to Build a Proton Pack
If you were young when the "Ghostbusters" movies came out and were a fan of those films, chances are you played games where you pretended to be one of the four main characters or even dressed up like one of them for Halloween. If this is the case, then you know that no Ghostbuster costume is complete without a proton pack. This is the backpack unit with the hose-like gun that they used to capture ghosts and you usually had to buy a replica of it in a toy store. But it's actually possible to make your own.
Things You'll Need
- Large cardboard box
- Glue
- Circular cookie tin or cake pan
- Medium cardboard box
- 2 soda bottles, 1 liter each
- Black electrical tape

1
Lay your cardboard box on the floor. The box should be about two feet by three feet, but as long as it is about the size of your back you don't need to worry about an exact size.
-
2
Glue your cake pan or cookie tin face-down in the middle of the bottom portion of the large box. Then take your medium sized box (about a half a foot wide and a foot in length) and glue that in the upper right corner of the large box, above the cake pan or cookie tin.

3
Cut the ends off of two soda bottles and wrap the bodies of the bottles in black electrical tape. Then tape the two ends together to form the barrel of the proton blaster.
-
4
Remove any wires from your mini race car gun and glue the gun to the bottom of the soda bottles, near the rear, to form the entire proton blaster.
-
5
Glue the end of one length of vacuum hose (about three to four feet) to the bottom right side of your cookie tin or cake pan. Then glue the other end of the hose to the back of the proton blaster (the side nearest the handle and trigger).
-
6
Get another length of vacuum hose (about two feet) and glue one end to the left side of the small box and the other end to the top left side of the cake pan or cookie tin.
-
7
Coat the proton pack in black spray paint and let it dry. Then glue four red bicycle reflectors to the outside of the cake pan, making sure one reflector is in each corner.
-
8
Place any appropriate warning stickers (bio hazard, danger, etc.) that you can find in the corners of the back of the proton pack and you are done.
