Remove a Trojan from your Windows XP system to optimize computer performance.

Successfully removing Trojan viruses from your Windows XP operating system is simple, most of the time, and can be done without professional help. Viruses are a danger because they can gather information about you and report it to others, including criminals. Even if your Trojan isn't reporting to anyone, it can slow the performance of your computer and hijack your programs, which makes computing a frustrating, time-consuming process. Removing a virus from Windows XP should make your computer run faster and safer at once.

Instructions

    • 1

Right-click on "My Computer" and select "Properties." Open the "System Restore" tab on the new dialog box, select "Turn Off System Restore" and choose "OK."

    • 2

Restart your computer in Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and then, after the memory count is performed and before the Windows loader appears, press "F8" repeatedly. You will be given the option to start in Safe Mode. Select it and the computer will load.

    • 3

Run an anti-virus program by opening it from the menu and selecting "Scan." You should also run any other programs you have to prevent adware or malware from being installed on your computer.

    • 4

Remove the Trojan by following the instructions on your anti-virus dialog box. Once you've removed it, restart the computer as usual.

Tips & Warnings

  • Repeat Step 1 to turn System Restore back on. This allows your system to save snapshots of itself in case any problems occur in the future.
