Index Cards

A bibliography source card is the index card that you use in order to write down the information you will need to include in the bibliography. Bibliography source cards help to organize your information during the research process. The bibliography is usually written after you write the research paper. However, you complete the bibliography source cards during the research process. In order to write a bibliography source card, find the source that you want to use, assign a number for the source, determine which type of source you are using, and record the necessary information in the proper format.

Instructions

    • 1

Find the source that you desire to use. Most research involves the use of more than one source. However, you will create one bibliography source card at a time. For example, the first source you may use is a book.

    • 2

Assign a number to the source. You have to assign an arbitrary number to the source in order to organize your notes. After writing down the bibliographic information, you may choose to write other notes about the source on separate index cards. Numbering the index card source will help you to keep track of which notes relate to which source. For example, you may assign your first source as source number 1. Write the number 1 in the upper right corner of the index card.

    • 3

Write the author of the book at the center of the index card, with the last name first. Put a comma between Write the last name and the first name, and put a period after the first name. Then, write the title of the source next to the name of the author. Underline the title, and put a period after it. For an internet source, you will need to write the title of the source in quotation marks after the name of the author. After you write the name of the website, you will need to write the publication medium, followed by a period, the date accessed, followed by a period, and the web address. For a magazine source, after you write the name of the magazine, you will need to write the date of the magazine issue, followed by a comma, and then the page numbers of the article, followed by a period.

    • 4

Indent a few spaces directly underneath the author and title of the book, and write the city of publication, followed by a colon. Then, write the publisher, followed by a comma, and then the publication date, followed by a period.

    • 5

Write the location of the source in the lower right corner of the bibliography source card. For example, if you own the book, then you can write "Personal Collection." Or, if you found the book in a library, the write "Library." If you found the book in the library, write the call number of the book in the lower left corner of the index card.
