How to Do a Shove-It on a Skimboard

Jump straight up, kicking one leg forward and one leg back to make the board spin beneath you, and then land riding forward.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Start running at an angle to the ocean as the water is receding.

  2. Step 2

Drop and step onto your board.

  3. Step 3

    Keep your balance centered.

  4. Step 4

Jump straight up while kicking one foot forward and one foot backwards in the "airwalk" motion. This will set the board spinning.

  5. Step 5

Time your jump so the board spins the desired amount before you land.

  6. Step 6

    Land and keep riding.

Tips & Warnings
  • The trick to a shove-it is the timing of your jump and kick coordinated with the spin of your board. Jump higher and kick harder for a 360 shove-it, and not as much for a 180.
  • Since your speed and the speed of the board are the same, when you jump, jump straight up, and not forward or backward, and you will land right on the board no matter how much it spins.
  • Smaller boards spin faster.
  • This trick is easier on a flat surface.

on 8/8/2006 Only push off with your back foot, it keeps all the momentum going forward(if you do it right), and therefore keeps up your speed to ride farther.

on 11/22/2005 If you are going to attempt a shove-it, make sure you also wax the nose because that's where your back foot often lands.

on 11/22/2005 Use a good amount of wax on your board to catch it so you don't slip off when you land. Be careful not to turn the board too fast or too much as it might speed away and you will have nothing to land on.
