How to Make a Counteroffer for a Job

Getting a job offer is always exciting. Sometimes, however, the salary you are being offered is not as high as you would like it to be. Making a counteroffer for a job is standard procedure in job negotiations, and there is a procedure you should follow when considering a position and coming up with a counteroffer. You should never accept a job proposal on the spot. Instead, ask to look it over in writing and then evaluate it. A company will usually agree to this, provided you do not take too long.

Instructions

    • 1

Research the position you are being offered in the company, and find out what the average salary for that position is.

    • 2

Research similar positions in other organizations, and determine the average annual salary for someone holding the position you are being offered, keeping in mind your qualifications and experience.

    • 3

Evaluate all other perks in your job offer instead of just the salary. This includes benefits, stock options, bonuses, vacation time and sick days.

    • 4

Write out your counterproposal, basing your desired salary on the research you have done. Start the negotiation by thanking the employer for giving you the opportunity to be hired. Go over the offer you were presented and outline the parts you want changed. Base all your counteroffer proposals on the evidence you have gathered.
