How to Become a Clinical Counselor

A professional clinical counselor is a job that requires a lot of training and a great deal of determination and commitment. Clinical counselor's have to spend a great deal of time in school, as well as under the supervision of more experienced counselors and psychologists. This experience and time in school is also followed by state exams and the necessity of a clinical license if a counselor intends on practicing independently.

      Achieve your master's degree in counseling. To get your master's degree you'll first need a bachelor's degree to enter the masters program, and while in the program you'll need to maintain a good GPA as well as complete a certain number of internship hours set by the program.

      Complete the necessary number of supervised hours. To get your license as a clinical counselor you'll have to complete a number of supervised counseling hours set by your state's licensing board before you can take the test.

      Get your license. This requires you to pass the state examination that all clinical counselors will have to take. Once you have your license you may practice as a clinical counselor.
