How to Bathe With Chlorhexidine

Chlorhexidine is an ingredient in many products in the home. A chemical antiseptic, chlorhexidine kills bacteria in the mouth and on the skin. Chlorhexidine is a common ingredient in mouthwash and is often a substitute for iodine for people with iodine allergies. Chlorhexidine has also proven effective in preventing the spread of bacterial skin infections when used in place of soap and water.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour 1 oz. chlorhexidine concentrate in an empty gallon jug and fill with warm water. Cap the jug and shake gently to evenly distribute the concentrate. Chlorhexidine is a powerful chemical and can burn the skin if not properly diluted.

    • 2

Turn the shower on, adjusting the temperature until the water is as warm as you can tolerate. Step under the water and wet your entire body, scrubbing gently with a wash cloth to remove grime and dead cells.

    • 3

Back away from the water and pour the chlorhexidine mixture on a clean wash cloth, then rub the solution over your entire body. Scrub to a lather and allow the mixture to sit on the skin for five minutes. Work the solution into any folds and cracks in the skin, as this is where bacteria most often live.

    • 4

Rinse the chlorhexidine solution away, letting the warm water run over your skin until all traces of chlorhexidine have been removed. Lift your feet and rinse the bottom of your feet and between your toes as well.

    • 5

Step out of the shower carefully to prevent slipping and dry with a clean towel. Work slowly, using additional towels if necessary to get completely dry. It is essential that all water is removed from the skin, as body heat and moisture encourage bacterial growth.
