How to Sew a Simple Duvet Cover
Homemade duvet covers are the perfect way to spice up a bedroom without breaking the budget or changing the furniture. Duvet covers can be made very simply from bed sheets or from pieced-together fabric. The best thing about making your own duvet cover is that you can customize it to your needs---you can applique the sheets before sewing them into a cover, embroider them or simply buy sheets with different designs on them, mixing and matching colors you choose.
Things You'll Need
- Measuring tape
- 2 single bed sheets
- Sewing machine
- Cotton thread
- Pins
- Scissors
- Fastening tape

1
Measure the size of your single comforter and cut the sheets to this size, adding 1 inch onto the width and 3 1/2 inches onto the length for the hem and seam allowances.
-
2
Turn the edges of the cut sheet fabric over into a double hem, about 1/2 inch wide, pinning down the hem, then sewing it on the sewing machine. This is done to each sheet separately.

-
3
Cut the fastening tape 10 inches shorter than the width of the cut sheet fabric, then pin them in the center of one end of the fabric, 1/2 on each side. Pin them on the right side of the fabric, about 1/2 inch from the hemline. Sew both sides of the fastening tape onto the fabric. Again, this is done to each sheet separately.
-
4
Place both sheets flat, so that their right sides are together, wrong sides facing out. Match the edges, pinning them together.
-
5
Sew around the entire sides of the sheets, making a 90 degree turn at the fastening tape, and sewing out to the edge of the fabric. Make the turn so that about 1/2 inch of the fastening tape is included in the seam.
-
6
Sew a double seam parallel to the first, for added strength.
-
7
Open the fastening tape, and turn the duvet cover right side out, to complete the simple duvet cover.
