How to Enable a DNS Client Service

How to Enable a DNS Client Service thumbnail
Enable DNS Client service.

The DNS Client service provides DNS caching on older Windows clients. The service runs in the background of a Windows machine, and it speeds up caching by saving domain name lookups. Each time you access an Internet address on your computer, the DNS client service takes a snapshot of the resolved name, so the next time you access the domain, the computer does not need to look up the IP address. You can enable this service in the Control Panel.

Instructions

    • 1

Click "Start" in the Windows task bar. Select "Settings" and click "Control Panel." Double-click "Administrative Tools." In this window, double-click "Services."

    • 2

Scroll down to "DNS Client" and double-click the icon. This opens a properties window for the DNS Client service.

    • 3

Click the "Start" button to start the service. To enable the service permanently each time you boot the machine, click "Automatic" in the drop-down labeled "Startup Type."

    • 4

Click "OK" to save your settings.
