How to Make a Toga From a Sheet

Ancient Romans created the toga.

Togas, ancient Roman robes used by elite members of the society, were immortalized by Roman senators and popularized by the film "Animal House." Today, togas are worn as outfits for Halloween and themed and fraternity parties. Togas are simple garments. Easily create one from a simple bed sheet. Recycle old bed sheets to create a simple, quick and inexpensive outfit for your next costume party. Or purchase a sheet from a thrift store.

Things You'll Need

• 1 white sheet
• Safety pins

Instructions

1. Look at a picture of a person wearing a toga, or find a depiction of Roman senators wearing their garb if you are going for authenticity.

2. Obtain a white sheet. Make sure it is long enough to wrap around your waist with extra to fling over your shoulder.

3. Pin one end of the sheet to your undergarments at your waist. Allow the fabric to fall at least to your knees. If you want your toga to sling over your left shoulder, pin the starting end to the right side of your waist. If you want it to sling over your right shoulder, pin the starting end to the left side of your waist.

4. Wrap the garment around your waist once. For greater stability in the outfit, pin the garment to your waist again after wrapping.

5. Throw the rest of the bed sheet over one shoulder and secure it to your waist one more time for security.

6. Use the picture to see if you correctly wrapped the toga. Use the picture to make any adjustments, folds, or creases that you may deem appropriate.

Tips & Warnings

• Togas can be made in any color, but traditionally they are white or white with a red border.

• Accessorize your outfit by wearing sandals or wearing a a laurel wreath around your head.
