1
Sweep your floor with a regular broom, making sure to get all of the dirt and dust that might be lurking in the corners. If you have a vacuum that is suitable for hardwood surfaces, you can use that instead of sweeping.
-
2
Dampen a mop with water and start scrubbing your floor. The water should loosen the dirt and will take the top layers of the buildup off. Once you are finished, dry the floor with a towel. It is important not to let moisture sit on your hardwood floor as this can cause damage.

Spray the hardwood floor with a neutral-PH wood cleaner. Check the label and leave the cleaner on the wood for as long as the manufacturer suggests. Generally this is between five to 15 minutes.

Dampen the mop again and then scrub the floor until all the cleaner has been removed. Then dry the floor again. The floor should be clean and free of buildup. However, if it is not, dampen the mop and try to scrub again with water.
