1
Remove the plug from the sink or tub. The drain needs to be easy to get to. Some plugs can be removed by simply twisting while others will need to be pulled up. The specific removal will depend on the type of plug in the sink or tub.
-
2
Fill the sink or tub with some water. There should be enough water to fill the plunger. The amount will differ between sinks and tubs as well as the size of the plunger.

3
Use a plunger that covers the drain completely. If it doesn't cover the drain, get a larger plunger. Put some petroleum jelly on the plunger to create a tight seal. Plunge the drain about 15 times and see if the drain unclogs. Repeat a few times before moving on to another method.

4
Use a drainage snake, or auger, to unclog the sink. Gently push the snake through the drain until it comes to the clog. Twist the handle to drill it slightly into the clog, then pull the clog out of the sink or push it down the drain. The best way to ensure that the clog doesn't just move further down is to pull it out. Repeat if necessary.

5
Pour baking soda into the drain and then pour boiling water over the baking soda. The baking soda should bubble in reaction to the boiling water. This will remove anything that remains of the clog in the sink. Use baking soda and boiling water once a month to prevent further clogs.
