DIY Plans for Bass Speakers

An effective bass speaker for car audio use consists of a subwoofer and a sturdy enclosure to mount the subwoofer into. You can make your own bass speaker by combining these elements. First, construct a wooden box out of readily available materials and tools. Second, mount the subwoofer into the box.

Things You'll Need

  • 1/2-inch Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF)
  • Measuring tape
  • Circular saw
  • Wood screws
  • Screwdriver
  • 10-inch subwoofer
  • Pencil
  • Jig saw
  • Drill and 1/4-inch drill bit
  • Speaker wire

Instructions

    • 1

      Measure and cut two rectangular pieces of MDF for the front and back sides of the box. Make the two panels measure 13 by 13 inches each.

      Measure and cut two rectangular pieces of MDF for the top and bottom sides of the box. Make the two panels measure 13 by 12 inches each.

      Measure and cut two rectangular pieces of MDF for the two sides of the box. Make the two panels measure 12 by 12 inches each.

      Assemble the side, top, and bottom panels together to make a hollow box with external dimensions of 13 by 13 inches around the outer edge. Screw the panels together, using wood screws spaced at intervals of two to three inches.

      Place the front and back panels onto the box, and screw them into place with wood screws spaced every three inches.

      Place the subwoofer face down onto the front panel and trace the circumference with a pencil onto the front panel. Remove the subwoofer and cut an opening following the circle, using a jig saw.

      Drill a hole in the back panel, two inches up from the bottom edge, using a drill and a 1/4-inch bit.

      Slide an 18-inch piece of speaker wire into the hole in the back panel from the outside. Reach into the box from the front and pull the end of the wire out. Attach the wire to the subwoofer and place the sub into the front panel opening. Screw the sub in place with wood screws placed in the openings in the sub's mounting flange.
