How to Paint a Trex Deck

Trex decking does not need to be painted for protection, but it can be painted to achieve a desired custom color. Most paints that can be used on wood can also be used for Trex decks. However, only paint designed for use on a walking surface should be used on a Trex deck. The deck does not need to be sanded before painting.

Things You'll Need

• Warm, soapy water
• Stiff-bristle brush
• Hose
• Paint
• Paintbrush or roller

Instructions

1. Remove any mold or mildew from the deck surface, using warm, soapy water and a brush with stiff bristles.

2. Wash the deck surface thoroughly. Spray the deck off with a hose. Use soap and hot water to wash off any dirt that will not easily rinse off.

3. Apply the paint to the decking, using a paintbrush or roller and following the manufacturer's directions on the paint container.

4. Apply paint to the deck railing, if present, using a paintbrush or roller. Follow the paint manufacturer's application instructions. Allow to dry.

Tips & Warnings

• Allow a new Trex deck to fade before preparing to paint it. In most cases, this will take between 12 and 16 weeks. The paint may not properly adhere to the decking if the deck has not had a chance to fade. Discoloration can occur when paint is applied to a Trex deck that has not faded.
