How to Layer Hair in a Scene Hair Cut

“Scene” hair is a style of haircut that involves short, choppy layers paired with long locks. Scene hair is often compared to “emo” hair, which has a similar look. One of the perks of layering your hair into a scene cut is that you don’t need to have long hair to begin with. Do-it-yourself hair extensions, found at any beauty supply store, allow you to start with virtually any length of hair to give yourself a scene cut. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Layering

    • 1

Part your hair with the rat tail comb in the direction you regularly part your hair. Lift the hair on one side of the part up, then create a horizontal part just above the top of your ear.

    • 2

Use the rat tail end of the comb to separate about a 1- to 2-inch chunk of hair parallel to and above the part. Clip away the mass of hair at the top of your head.

    • 3

Take your index and middle finger and pull the chunk of hair slightly up and away from your head, squeezing the hair between your fingers. Position your fingers so that they are about 6 inches from the roots of the hair chunk.

    • 4

Cut the hair protruding beyond your fingers with the scissors, keeping the cut line straight against your fingers. Let the hair fall down when it is cut.

    • 5

Remove another 1- to 2-inch chunk of hair from the clipped away hair and repeat step 3, except position your fingers about 5 inches from the root. Repeat step 4.

    • 6

Repeat steps 3 and 4 until you reach the crown of your head on one side, keeping the cut length of each hair chunk between 4 and 5 inches. Then, repeat steps 2 through 4 for the opposite side of the part and the back of your head.

    Adding Extensions

    • 7

Create a part from ear to ear around the back of your head and clip the hair away.

    • 8

Squeeze a line of latex glue along the sewn end of a super-long, straight hair weft, then press the weft with your fingers about 1/4-inch from the natural hair root. Hold the extension in place for about 15 seconds to let it dry, then continue applying wefts to the rest of the part.

    • 9

Create another ear-to-ear part about 1/2-inch above the first part. Repeat step 2 to add extensions all along the part. Add between four and five layers of extensions.

Tips & Warnings

  • Leave your bangs longer in the front if desired, sweeping them over your brow in a side part. Or, include your bangs in your layering, giving them a choppy look.

  • Keep in mind that a scene haircut can look choppy and uneven.

  • Have a friend help you cut the hair at the back of your head, or position yourself between two facing mirrors so you can see the back.

  • When applying extensions, cut a weft to the same size as the part you created instead of cutting small sections.

  • Use 100 percent human hair extensions. These can be worn longer and can be styled with heating tools like hair straighteners.

  • Dye your hair with streaks of black, pink, green or any other bright color for the ultimate scene look.
