Building a Ferris Wheel for a School Project

Children can make models of Ferris Wheels in the classroom.

Watching a child's eyes light up when he sees the carnival or circus coming to town can be a parent's delight. One of the most popular amusement rides found at these and other entertainment events is the Ferris Wheel. This ride was invented in 1893; the first wheel stood nearly 260 feet tall. Children can replicate this exciting ride in miniature in the classroom with a fun craft project.

Things You'll Need

• Scissors
• Cardboard
• Ruler
• Pen or marker
• Pencils, markers, or dowel rods

Instructions

1. Cut two identical circles from sturdy cardboard. The size of the circles will vary depending on the size of the Ferris Wheel model you want to make; these circles will serve as the main body of your wheel.

2. Divide the circles into even sections using a ruler or other straight-edge and pen or marker. The number of sections will vary by your design; the sections should all be the same size, stemming out from the center of the circle.

3. Decorate the wheel with markers, paint or other crafting tools. Draw seats, people and other decorations to give your wheel a festive feel.

4. Cut small "X" marks into the centers of the circles, as well as into each section; these marks show where the axles go that will hold the Ferris Wheel sides together.

5. Insert axis pieces into the "X" marks so that they press out through into the other circle. These pieces can be pencils, markers, dowel rods or other straight materials. Decorate these axis pieces if you want to add more color to your piece.

6. Hold one end of the central axis piece and gently push downwards on one of the other axles; the wheel will spin in the direction you push.

• Always supervise children when working with scissors, to avoid injury.
