Instructions

    • 1

Remove the bedding from your mattress. Wash the bedding with hot water and detergent according to the care labels. Take dry clean-only bedding to a professional to clean at least three times a year to remove the dust mites.

    • 2

Use an attachment on your vacuum cleaner to clean the mattress and box spring. Vacuum the small crevices and cracks carefully.

    • 3

Steam clean your mattress with a small hand-held steam cleaner. Follow the instructions on the steam cleaner, and run it over both your mattress and box spring to eliminate the dust mites.

    • 4

Cover the mattress and box spring with a dust mite cover. The plastic will prevent the dust mites from living on your mattress. It will also trap any remaining dust mites in the mattress and box spring, cutting off their food source and causing starvation.

    • 5

Remove and clean other items on your bed. These items may include blankets, pillows and stuffed animals. Dust mites can live on these items and transfer back onto your mattress.

    • 6

Place a dehumidifier in your bedroom. This will reduce the humidity and prevent dust mites from thriving in your bedroom.
