Instructions

    • 1

Prepare two ends of bamboo sticks, or two bunches of bamboo sticks, you want to lash together. Depending on your construction and structure, you may want to glue the two ends together to make it easier. Also, the two ends may be positioned under different angles, again depending on the specific construction. But make sure that the bamboo sticks pass each other by an inch or two at least.

    • 2

Take the lashing you want to use as a binding rope and cross it behind the bottom bamboo, pulling the two ends of the rope over the top bamboo. Repeat crossing behind the bottom bamboo, this time pulling the ends on the other side of the top bamboo. At this point, looking from above, you should see a lashing square over the bamboo joint.

    • 3

Cross the lashing at the back of the bamboo joint, forming the letter X. Then carry the ends of lashing to the front of the joint, making an X on the front as well.

    • 4

Pull the ends of the lashing behind the bamboo joint and hold them up with your fingers.

    • 5

Pull the ends you are holding to the front on the bamboo joint, crossing them in front. Then again, pull both ends to the back of the joint once again.

    • 6

Tie the lashing on the back on the bamboo joint once you have pulled the ends behind. Use a regular knot but make sure to make it as tight as possible.

    • 7

Apply glue to the ends of the knot and the knot itself to prevent it from coming undone.

    • 8

Burn off the extra threads around the lashing with flame, best by using a lighter. Be careful not to burn the lashing, but simply the small threads that stick out of it. The final result should look orderly and smooth.

Tips & Warnings

  • Secure the bamboo joint prior to the lashing; it will make the process easier.

  • Be extremely careful when burning off the extra thread on the lashing: bamboo is flammable and you can not only destroy your construction but seriously hurt yourself or others.
