How to Prevent Slips & Falls in a Commercial Kitchen thumbnail
Slip and fall accidents occur in commercial kitchens.

Slip and fall accidents are extremely common in commercial kitchen. Workers are under pressure to get orders out quickly, and rushing around can result in accidents. The severity of these accidents ranges from some spilled food to broken bones or worse. Preventing slips and falls from occurring in your commercial kitchen should be a priority. You want to make sure your workers are safe and protected at all times, and you need to make sure you're protected legally.

Instructions

    • 1

Install slip-resistant flooring. A commercial kitchen should have the highest grade of slip-resistant flooring available to prevent slips and falls.

    • 2

Cover certain areas with non-slip floor covers for additional protection. High risk areas include places that can get wet, oily or greasy.

    • 3

Require all your workers to wear slip-resistant shoes designed for working in a commercial kitchen. Even employees that don't regularly work in the kitchen, such as servers, should wear these shoes because everyone walks through the kitchen at one time or another.

    • 4

Implement a policy that requires workers to clean up spills as soon as possible. Water, oil, grease and other slick substances can easily cause slip and fall accidents even if you have slip-resistant floors and shoes.

    • 5

Ask your workers to place warning signs near spills that can't be cleaned up immediately. That way, your workers will know to be careful around those areas until the spill can be cleaned up.

    • 6

Be consistent and enforce your new rules. Let your employees know what the consequences will be for not following rules such as placing warning signs or wearing slip-resistant food. Talk with them regularly, and remind them of the dangers of slip and fall accidents.

I am so surprised that the focus is always on footwear for employees. However statiscs have proven that they fractionally, 24 %, reduce the slips and falls on wet surfaces. This is very small. Footwear must be washed so the grease is elimanted on the surface of the bottom of the shoe, otherwise the employee is tracking grease throughout the restaurant as well as they sole of the shoe is not really protecting the employee. Floors should be treated with a no slip coating, which is not an acid etching product. This protects both employees, patrons, repair people and inspectors. Proper floor washing with a cleaner/degreaser is essential-not simply washing with hot water or a product that calls for deck brushing and that protocol is not adhered to. Absorbent matting in entrance in fact has caused many client slips and falls because the edges curl up.
