How to Safely Siphon Gas

It sometimes happens that your car or lawnmower runs out of gas and you aren't able to get to the gas station. A well-known way of dealing with this is siphoning gas from another car's gas tank into a canister via a plastic tube, and the canister can then be used to refill the tank. The most common mistake people make when creating a siphon is allowing the gas to reach their mouths and potentially causing themselves great harm. Here is a simple--and, more importantly, safe--way to siphon gas from one tank to another.

Things You'll Need

  • 3/8-inch plastic tube, 6 feet
  • Gasoline canister

Instructions

    • 1

Insert one end of the 3/8-inch plastic tube into the gas tank to be siphoned. Make sure the tube goes below the surface level of the gas in the tank.

    • 2

Make a loop out of the hose so the bottom of the loop is well below the level of gas tank and the end of the hose comes up above the gas tank.

    • 3

Keep holding the free end of the tube so it is above the gas tank, put your mouth entirely over the end of the tube and draw in a continuous breath.

    • 4

As soon as you see the gas entering the tube reaching the height of the gas tank, stop sucking.

    • 5

Slowly lower the free end of tube below the level of the gas tank. Gas will rush out. Feed it directly into a freestanding gasoline canister.

    • 6

Remove the hose from the gasoline canister when you have as much gas as you need.

    • 7

Quickly raise the hose so the end is above the height of the gas tank. You should see the gas stop running through the hose at this point.

    • 8

Pull the other end of the hose out of the gas tank on the car. As you pull it out, you should also try to hold it upward so no gas runs out of it.

    • 9

Empty any gas left behind in the tube should be emptied into the gas canister.

Tips & Warnings

  • Stand on a chair to get the hose to the right height.

  • Make sure the car is not running when you are siphoning gas.
