Dead bolt locks install much like standard door knobs. Two screws secure the lock bodies to the door. Instructions

    • 1

Open the door so you have access to both sides of the lock. Locate the two retaining screws on the face of the inside portion of the dead bolt lock. Some screws are hidden behind a faceplate on the dead bolt to provide an extra measure of security. Locate the seam between the edge of the face plate and the lock body. Insert a small flat-head screwdriver in the seam to pry the face plate away from the lock body.

Remove the retaining screws with a Phillips-head screwdriver. The screws insert through the inside lock body into threaded sleeves on the back of the front lock body. Grasp the inner and outer lock bodies with your hands, and pull them out of the door.

Locate the screws securing the dead bolt latch plate to the edge of the door. Some manufacturers hide the screw behind a plate that snaps over the latch plate. Pry the plate off with a flat-head screwdriver to reveal the screw heads. Remove the screws with a Phillips-head screwdriver, and pull the latch assembly out of the door.

Turn the screws that secure the strike plate counterclockwise with a Phillips-head screwdriver. The strike plate mounts to the door jamb, and the dead bolt protrudes through the plate when locked. Grasp the strike plate by the curved end, and pull the strike plate away from the door jamb.
