Visit an online crossword puzzle website. Many of these websites provide software that you can use to create your own crossword puzzle. Some of these include Edhelper.com, Crosswordpuzzlegames.com, Armoredpenguin.com and Puzzle-maker.com.

Proceed to the crossword puzzle page. On some websites, such as Crosswordpuzzlegames.com, you must click a "Create crossword" button from the navigation bar to proceed to the crossword page. Others, such as Armoredpenguin.com, have the crossword program immediately available on the home page.

Enter your name and a title for your crossword, if possible. Many websites, such as Edhelper.com and Puzzle-maker.com, have a field that you can use to enter a title for your puzzle if you wish. Some, Armoredpenguin.com for example, also offer a field for the author's name. Crosswordpuzzlegames.com is an example of a site that offers neither.

Select options for the puzzle, if this is possible. Some websites, such as Armoredpenguin.com, let the users choose options such as the size and color of the squares in the grid.

Enter the words and associated clues in the fields provided. The number of fields available for the answers will vary by website. For instance, Armoredpenguin.com provides 50 fields, Crosswordpuzzlegames.com provides 20 and Edhelper offers 15. You can enter as many answers as you wish; it is not necessary to complete all the fields.

Click the "Make puzzle" button when you are done. This produces the completed puzzle grid on the following page. Many websites provide the option of printing the puzzle but some, like Crosswordpuzzle.com, do not offer this option.
