How to Modify a .177 Pellet Rifle to Increase the FPS

How to Modify a .177 Pellet Rifle to Increase the FPS thumbnail
A .177 caliber air rifle can shoot a pellet for a great distance

A .177 caliber air rifle can shoot a pellet at a greater distance if the spring is replaced. You can disassemble the air rifle and replace the spring with a more powerful one purchased from a hobby store or gun-supply shop. This will increase the feet per second (FPS) that the pellet will travel upon being shot from the gun. The use of a replacement spring will not void the warranty of the air rifle, nor will the partial disassembly of the air rifle void the warranty since disassembling it is a standard procedure for regular maintenance.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Put a soft cloth on a table. Put the .177 caliber air rifle on the soft cloth with the barrel facing to the left. Remove the screw from the top edge of the air rifle by the front of the barrel with the Phillips screwdriver.

    • 2

Remove the screw from the center top edge of the barrel with the Phillips screwdriver. Remove the screw from the back end where the top edge meets the gun stock, again using the Phillips screwdriver.

    • 3

Remove the screws from the other side of the air rifle in a similar way as above.

    • 4

Remove the screws from the gun stock on both sides using the Phillips screwdriver.

    • 5

Pull the top sliding plate barrel off the top of the air rifle with your fingers.

    • 6

Remove the two clips from the grooves in the hole at the back end of the top of the air rifle by the hammer, using the tip of the flat-edged jeweler's screwdriver.

    • 7

Insert the tip of the flat-edged jeweler's screwdriver into the spring latch on the jutting trigger edge section at the back end of the top sliding plate barrel. Lift up on the tip of the flat-edged jeweler's screwdriver to pull the spring latch out.

    • 8

Remove the clip on the left side of the jutting trigger edge where it meets the barrel, using the tip of the flat-edged jeweler's screwdriver,

    • 9

Pull the metal bracket sliding lock down and out to the left from the bottom of the top sliding plate barrel with your fingers.

    • 10

Push down on the front of the barrel. Upend the sliding bracket from the bottom of the barrel that is now revealed with your fingers.

    • 11

Turn the top sliding plate barrel over so that you can see the spring inside of the groove.

    • 12

Remove the cover plate at the opposite end from the barrel that is keeping the spring inside of the groove with the flat-edged jeweler's screwdriver. Pull the spring out. Discard the spring properly.

    • 13

Insert the replacement spring into the grooved end. Place the cover plate back onto the end. Reattach the screws. Turn the top sliding plate barrel over.

    • 14

Turn the metal bracket sliding lock back over onto the bottom of the top sliding plate barrel. Pull the front of the barrel back up.

    • 15

Reattach the clip to the jutting trigger edge. Reattach the spring latch to the jutting trigger edge section. Put the two clips back into the grooves in the hole at the back end of the top of the air rifle by the hammer. Reverse the disassembly process to put the air rifle back together.

    • 16

Place a pellet on the soft cloth. Insert one end of the drill bit into the top part of the pellet. Twirl the drill bit between your fingers to make a hole in the top part of the pellet.

    • 17

Cock the bolt of the .177 air rifle. Insert a pellet into the firing chamber. Close the bolt. Aim at a target at a range to see the increased firepower and traveling distance of the pellet being fired.

Tips & Warnings

  • A gun vise will make it easier to disassemble an air rifle.

  • Wear gloves when making the hole in the pellet.

  • Never aim an air rifle at a person or pet regardless of whether it is loaded or not.
