My Self Cleaning Oven Turns Itself Off When Baking

James Clark

Self-cleaning ovens help remove burnt and caked-on food spills by incinerating them on high heat over a period of several hours. When complete, you just sweep out the debris with a whisk broom and dust pan. These types of ovens work with a timer to control the cleaning process. The built-in timer can also manage cooking and baking in the oven. If your self-cleaning oven shuts off while baking, either the timer has been activated or the temperature sensor is malfunctioning. Temperature sensors may cause problems following a self-cleaning cycle.

A self-cleaning oven is handy until it shuts off while baking.
  1. Press the timer on/off button on the front control panel to shut off the timer feature. On many oven models, pressing this button turns an LED light on or off. The glowing light indicates whether the timer function is activated.

  2. Preheat the oven as you normally would for baking. Monitor the control panel when the oven reaches the preset temperature and check the oven interior every few minutes to determine if the oven is still turning itself off.

  3. Turn off the oven and unplug the appliance from the electrical outlet. Even a gas oven with electronic controls wil have a power cord. Wait five minutes before reconnecting the power cord.

  4. Preheat the oven once more for baking and check the interior as well as the control panel. If the oven continues to shut down when baking, the temperature sensor has likely malfunctioned. This is a safety feature built into many ovens, causing the appliance to shut off. If the sensor goes bad, a faulty reading can cause the oven to shut off the heating element circuits for baking.
