Colorful cotton yarn makes for a stylish all-season scarf

A scarf is a versatile accessory that can keep you warm in the winter or just add a dash of color or texture to your outfit in any season. Choose wool or wool-blend yarn in a weight appropriate for fall or winter or a lightweight bamboo, cotton or cotton blend yarn for spring or summer. A long, narrow fashion scarf is a good choice for any time of year as it can be worn in a variety of ways. If you are familiar with chaining, half double crochet and double crochet stitches, you can complete a mesh fashion scarf in one evening with a single skein of yarn.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a loop in your yarn and chain 200 with your G hook. This scarf is worked length wise. Loop the chain around your neck to make sure you like the length. Add or remove an even number of stitches until the length suits you.

    • 2

Work a half-double crochet in the third chain from the hook. Make half-double crochets in every chain across.

    • 3

Chain four and turn your work. Make a double crochet in the second half-double crochet from the chain. Chain one. Skip one half-double crochet, double crochet in the next half-double crochet and chain one. Repeat this series to the end of the row. This is the mesh row.

    • 4

Chain two and turn your work. Make a half-double crochet in each chain and double crochet all the way across. Your scarf should now look like a narrow ladder.

    • 5

Chain four and turn your work. Complete another mesh row, followed by one more row of half-double crochet. Cut off your yarn, leaving a 3-inch tail. Pull the tail through the last stitch.

    • 6

Thread the tail onto your tapestry needle and weave it back up into the row of half-double crochet to finish.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have enough yarn left, add a long fringe onto each end.

  • Use a metallic yarn for a chic evening look.

  • Do additional rows of mesh and half double crochet for a wider scarf.
