How to Make Crystal Quartz Jewelry

Wrap quartz pendants for jewelry.

Quartz crystals serve as sparkling embellishments to necklaces and earrings. These crystals vary in color from clear to shades of pink, yellow and blue. Though difficult to carve because of its density, quartz points and shards work just as well in jewelry as carefully smoothed pieces. Plus, these pieces are fairly easy to make at home. All you need are the proper findings and some wire-wrapped quartz. Wrapping the quartz can be difficult, but the results make a beautiful pair of original earrings or a handmade necklace.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a piece of wire about three times as long as your quartz crystal with your wire cutters. For instance, if your quartz point is 2 inches long, cut a piece of wire about 6 inches long. This gives you plenty of wrapping room.

    • 2

Grip one end of the wire with your round-nosed pliers and bend it in on the rest of the wire, forming a small circle. Release the circle from the pliers and use the edge of one of the pliers' rounded points to smooth wire against the circle to form a small coil.

    • 3

Decide which end of your quartz point you want hanging downward. Place the coil against that end and hold it with your thumb. Wrap the rest of the wire around the quartz in a loose coil. Twist the wire into a tight circle with your pliers against the top of the point.

    • 4

Bend the excess wire up so it stands vertically. Wrap the wire closest to the quartz around a point on your round-nosed pliers and form a circle about half the size of a pencil eraser. Snip away excess wire with your wire cutters.

    • 5

String the quartz onto a chain with other wrapped points or open the hoop of a fishhook earring hook and slide the point onto it. Repeat steps to make more points for other earrings or pendants.
