How to Make Your Own Capsicum Spray

How to Make Your Own Capsicum Spray thumbnail
Make capsicum spray with jalapenos or other hot peppers.

Capsicum spray, or pepper spray, originated in Asia as a weapon in battle. According to Stun Gun Pepper Spray, Chinese and Japanese soldiers tossed it in enemies' faces to incapacitate them. The formula is simple and effective--oils from the peppers cause burning in the eyes and skin. Only large amounts of cool water or other liquids can stop the burning. Oleoresin capsicum is the oil in peppers that makes them spicy and is also the main ingredient in pepper spray. The intensity of the spray depends on the amount of capsicum in the peppers. Control the intensity of spray you make at home.

Instructions

    • 1

Chop the stems from two or three jalapeno peppers and cut them in half. You may remove the seeds, but the seeds contain much of the capsicum oils. For a more intense spray, leave them in the peppers

    • 2

Toss your peppers into a blender and pulse it until the peppers appear finely chopped. Scrape them out of the blender with a wooden spoon and into a glass bowl.

    • 3

Cover the ground peppers with rubbing alcohol. Stir and mash them with a wooden spoon for about 10 minutes. This mixes the oils with the rubbing alcohol.

    • 4

Pour the mixture into a lidded jar and add 2 tsp. baby oil. Cap the jar tightly and shake for about two minutes. This mixes the oils and alcohol thoroughly.

    • 5

Rinse your glass bowl and place a piece of cheesecloth over it. Strain the mixture from the jar to the bowl. Pour it into a spray bottle.
