How Do You Become a Vet Tech at a Zoo?
Animal lovers can work closely with rare animals as a veterinary technologist or technician at a zoo. Veterinary technologists assist veterinarians in all aspects of care for zoo animals, including diagnosing ailments, administering treatment and implementing preventive care programs.

Graduate from a college accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association with an associate degree or bachelor's degree in veterinary technology, biology, chemistry or a related field. Many schools offer veterinary technology degrees online.

Pass the certification examination in your state. That qualifies you to obtain a veterinary technician license or certification, which most states require to become a veterinary technologist at a zoo. Most states use the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE) for certification. Apply to take the test through the American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVBS) website. A fee is required.
Approval to take the test will be accompanied by scheduling information. Go to the AAVBS website (www.aavbs.org) for additional requirements and procedures in your state. Passing scores vary depending on the state. -

Get at least one year of work experience as a veterinary technologist, preferably in a clinical laboratory, public aquarium or hatchery. Experience can be gained through internships during your last year of college.

Apply for a veterinary technologist position at a zoo. Submit an application through the zoo's website or the Association of Zoos and Aquariums website (www.aza.org), which posts job opportunities at zoos throughout the country.
