How to Create & Print a Free Sympathy Card
Even with technological advances such as email and text messaging, greetingcard.org says most Americans would rather receive a greeting card or letter in the mail (see References 1). A card created for a specific occasion, such as the loss of a loved one, is a thoughtful way to express care and concern.

1
Look through sympathy cards in a grocery store or card shop before you get started, just to get some basic ideas. According to greetingcard.org, sympathy cards comprise 6 percent of all cards sold in the U.S.
-
2
Write out what you would like to say in your card before you start work on the computer. For example, you might want to include a Bible verse or a few lines from a poem. Simplesympathy.com has several ideas for sympathy card wording (see Resources).

3
Find out if your computer has desktop publishing software that will work to design your card. Almost all computers have some sort of program that can be used.
-
4
Decide if you want your card to be tall or wide. If you want your card to be tall, set the page to "landscape" in your page setup options, and place your graphics on the right side of the page. If you want it to be wide, set your page to "portrait" and place your graphics on the bottom half of the page.
-
5
Choose the graphics for the front of your card. You can use a photo you've taken, or search your desktop publishing program for a piece of appropriate clip art. Flowers, cloud scenes, sunrises, and sunsets make good choices.
-
6
Add text to the front of your card. Place it across an area of the picture that is unimportant, such as a blank patch of grass or a clear part of the sky.
-
7
Create a different page with just text for the inside of your card. Place your text on the same part of the page as you placed your graphic for the front.
-
8
Print out your card on card stock. You might want to print out a test sheet on regular paper to make sure you have the alignment correct. Print out the front sheet with the graphic on it first, then flip it over and print the text on the other side.
