A floor plan can help you with design decisions.

A floor plan, if drawn to scale, can be of inestimable use in your interior planning and design. Not only can you see exactly the shapes of your rooms and the placement of openings such as doors and windows, but you can measure your current furniture and fixtures, and take measurements of remaining spaces for new appliances or furnishings. If you are careful enough, you can even use the dimensions of items provided by the manufacturer to see if a particular item will fit in your new arrangement. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Select a scale that will allow you to fit the entire floor onto one page. Using 1/4 inch for one foot is a standard, and will allow a floor of up to 72 feet by 96 feet to be rendered on a piece of paper that is 18 inches by 24 inches.

    • 2

Use the tape measure to measure the length and width of the full interior. If you have a hallway or other open space that runs the full length or width, use that; otherwise, add together the measurements made from room to room.

    • 3

Mark out the dimensions of the full floor on the paper, using your selected scale. If you go with a 1/4-inch-per-foot scale, a floor that is 40 feet by 60 feet will translate to a rectangle of 10 inches by 15 inches.

Starting in one corner of the floor, measure the dimensions of each room and place them into the proper position on your plan. You may find it easier to draw in the rooms first, then erase the space for the interior doors.

    • 5

Measure the openings in the walls, such as doorways, as well as their placement, and erase a line of the proper length from your plan. A 3-foot doorway using a 1/4-inch scale would be 3/4 inches long on your plan. Make sure you measure the distance from the left and right of the doorway to the nearest wall to set it in the correct position on the plan.

Measure the windows in the same way you measured the doorways, if you wish, and mark them on the plan using a heavy line.
