MS Word Templates can be easily modified.

Any MS Word template may be modified to the user's specifications. A common use of modifying a template would be to include a company's name on a business letter template. Other examples of modifying a template would be to personalize a fax cover sheet template, adding pictures or symbols to templates, customizing forms, and reformatting resumes. A template can also be modified so that it prints correctly without having to change the print settings for each document.

Instructions

    • 1

Click "Open" under the "File" menu.

    • 2

Select "Document Templates (*.dot)" on the "Files of Type" drop-down box. Select the template that you want to modify, and click "Open."

    • 3

Make any changes you want to the template. The template is modified exactly the same way as any other MS Word document. You can change text, formatting, page settings, print settings, headers and footers and automatic variables such as the date and page number.

Click the "Save" button on the Standard toolbar when you are finished making your changes. Then close the template. The template is now modified.

Tips & Warnings

  • The changes to a template affect only those documents created after the changes have been made. A document created before the changes to the template will remain unchanged unless it is updated. To update a document with the modified template, select "Templates and Add-Ins" from the "Tools" menu. Select the "Automatically update document styles" option, and click "OK."
