Skip the ball off the water for a hard and deceptive shot.

From Quick Guide: Water Polo
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Hold the ball in the cocked shooting position.

  2. Step 2

Decide where you want to skip the ball. You may need to skip it close to you to get under a defender's arm, or you may need a long skip to go under the goalie's arm. Whatever angle you shoot the ball at, the skip will roughly mirror this angle when the ball skips up.

  3. Step 3

Aim for that place in the water.

  4. Step 4

Shoot hard from the shoulder, and roll the ball off your fingertips to give it a slight underspin. It is vital that you throw the ball hard for it to skip.

  5. Step 5

    Follow through with your shot.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can shoot a skip shot sidearm as well.
  • Sometimes rough water, common during a game, can cause a wild skip. This is a good close-to-the-cage shot because it's powerful and somewhat unpredictable.
  • If you have any condition that would impair or limit your ability to engage in physical activity, please consult a physician before attempting this activity. This information is not intended as a substitute for professional medical advice or treatment.
