How to Roll a Tongue When Speaking Spanish

How to Roll a Tongue When Speaking Spanish thumbnail
Proper pronunciation is key when learning a new language.

In the Spanish language, the "R"s are exaggerated. Spanish speakers exaggerate the "R" by rolling their tongue as they pronounce it. It is more natural for some people than it is for others; some may not be able to roll their tongues as easily. Some people find it impossible to pronounce "R"s correctly. With practice and technique, it's possible to learn to roll the tongue when speaking Spanish.

Instructions

    • 1

Relax your mouth and tongue. Try to release any tension in your tongue muscles. Repeat the phrase "Tee dee va" over and over out loud to relax your tongue.

    • 2

Bend the tip of your tongue upward so it touches the roof of your mouth.

    • 3

Practice short rolling "R" sounds like "trrr" and "drrr." Let the sound vibrate through the tip of your tongue. Repeat them about 20 times to get used to the rolling tongue motion.

    • 4

Practice making a constant rolling tongue sound. It may take a while, but if you keep practicing it will start to work.

    • 5

Incorporate your new tongue roll into Spanish words.
