How to Install a Wolff Recoil Spring in a Colt 1911 Small End

While most Colt 1911 owners will cite the weapon's reliability and accuracy (or perhaps the simple iconic nature of the gun itself) as the reason for owning one, one of the nicest things about owning a Colt 1911 is its ease to maintain and repair. The 1911 is designed to be disassembled quickly and easily, without the need for any tools other than your hand. Replacing the recoil spring on a Colt 1911--with a recoil spring purchased from Wolff, specifically--is also relatively simple, once you know what you are doing.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the recoil spring plug on the front of the 1911, just below the barrel. Use your fingers or a coin to push the plug inwards, then twist the bushing (essentially the face-plate of the pistol that holds the plug in place) clockwise to release the plug.

    • 2

Remove the recoil spring from the Colt 1911 and discard it--be careful doing this, as the spring is compressed and the plug may come shooting out if you are not careful.

    • 3

Place the Wolff recoil spring inside the recoil spring hole, with the smaller end of the spring inside the 1911 and the end with the slightly hooked portion on the outside of the 1911.

    • 4

Place the recoil spring plug over the spring and press the plug back into the body of the 1911.

    • 5

Twist the bushing back into place while keeping the plug compressed with your finger. Your new recoil spring is now ready for action.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure that your Colt 1911 is unloaded before you attempt to do any routine maintenance on the weapon itself.
