Ceiling Light Dish Shade Replacement
Replacing an old ceiling light shade with a different one updates the style of a lamp without requiring you to do any rewiring. A dish-shaped shade may have a screw or nut on the bottom that fastens to a pedestal extending from the bottom of the light fixture. If the replacement you want to install is shaped to come too close to the bulb or bulbs when it's installed against the bottom of the pedestal, purchase an extension that screws into the bottom of the pedestal and allows you to screw the new shade in a little lower. Turn off the light and let the shade cool so the fixture is comfortable to handle. Place a step stool under the light and stand on it if the lamp is too high to reach from the floor.

Unscrew the knob or nut in the center of the shade by turning it counterclockwise. You may be able to turn it by hand; if not, use pliers, squeezing gently. Support the shade with your other hand to keep it from rotating and to prevent it from falling as the nut comes off.

Slip the old shade down off the central post. Slide the new shade up in place of it.

Screw the knob or nut back on, turning it clockwise, until it's snug against the shade. Hold the shade to keep it from rotating as you turn the nut.

Tips & Warnings
If the shade doesn't have a central screw on the lower side, it may be the globe style. Look for two or three screws sticking out from a metal collar that surrounds the upper portion of the fixture, at the ceiling. To release it, unscrew the screws while supporting the shade. If you don't see any screws in the collar, try unscrewing the globe itself by turning it counterclockwise.
