How to Apply for a Texas Hardship License

You may qualify for a Texas driver's license as young as 15.

A Texas hardship license is a driver's license given to a minor when not being able to drive would cause one of several hardships to either the family or the minor, such as economic hardship or not being able to attend school. Texas hardship licenses are only available to teenagers between the ages of 15 and 17. Anyone 18 or older is not eligible to receive a Texas hardship license.

Instructions

1. Determine if you are eligible for a hardship license. You might qualify if (1) not having a license would cause economic hardship on your family, (2) a family member is ill or (3) you need a to license because you are enrolled in a vocational education program.

2. Obtain a DL-77 MRDL application from a Texas Driver License office with the Department of Public Safety. Complete the form and submit it at the office along with proof of your identity and your Social Security number.

3. Take a parent with you to the DPS office because a parent must sign the authorization in person.

4. Complete any forms you are give at the DPS office. Provide proof that your vehicle is registered and licensed in Texas. Pay the fee.

5. Take and pass the written, driving and vision tests. Provide a photograph, which usually is taken at the DPS office and your thumbprints.
