How to Stop Yahoo Junk Mail

How to Stop Yahoo Junk Mail thumbnail
Eliminate spam by keeping your email address private.

Junk mail is unavoidable in most cases, as it seems to follow users no matter how many different email addresses you create. While companies sometimes sell their contact lists to spam providers, it is common that companies email random Yahoo addresses in hopes that the email is active. Fortunately, there are ways to eliminate these messages, random or collected through websites and email lists. There are also solutions to receiving Yahoo spam emails that contain scams and malicious intent.

Forward spam emails that appear deceptive or illegal to the FCC at spam@uce.gov. The FCC takes action against many people who send email that is deceptive or illegal in nature. Identify these emails by determining whether if it is a free money opportunity from other countries, those asking for money orders, or other business ventures that seem deceptive. These emails are quite common and the FCC has a better chance of ending the scam before someone falls for it if reported each time one of these emails are received.

Avoid responding to Yahoo junk mail by clicking the link located at the bottom of the email address. In some instances, this allows spammers to continue sending email by seeing the email is active. Do not reply to the email asking them to stop as this may potentially have the same effect. The company may change the email address the spam is coming from or sell the list for profit to companies who advertise through email. Click "Spam" on all messages that appear to be spam. Click "Empty" next to the spam folder to remove them permanently from your Yahoo email or select the emails one by one and click "Delete." Click "OK" to finish deleting the emails permanently.

Set up filters in your Yahoo email account to automatically delete emails based on keywords if they continue to get through the spam filter. Select the "Options" dropdown on the right side of your Yahoo email account. Click "Mail Options" and then "Filters" on the menu on the left of the page. Click "Add Filter" at the top of the Filters page. Name the filter and place keywords next to the areas for sender, recipient, subject, and body. Click "Choose Folder" to indicate where you would like these messages moved to. Select "Trash" or "Spam" to eliminate them from being sent to your mailbox. Click "Save Changes" at the top when you are finished setting up your filter. Click "Return to Mail" to go back to the main page of your Yahoo email account.

Avoid broadcasting your email by posting it on websites, forums, or other public areas online. Use a separate email address from your personal one if posting the email address is unavoidable. Many companies search forums and websites to find active emails to send spam to. Do not give your personal email address to anyone you do not know personally or trust. You will receive a decreased amount of spam by keeping your email address private and exclusive to a few select recipients.
