How to Post a Job Advertisement

How to Post a Job Advertisement thumbnail
The key when developing a job posting, whether posted on a bulletin board or submitted to website, is to stand out.

Online job postings have in some cases replaced the traditional classified advertisement. Because these posting opportunities are so plentiful and popular, your posting will be competing with many others. Your job posting will need to get the attention of job candidates who will be right for you.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a list of the sites that would most appeal to the types of applicants you're looking for. Visit the sites and read the about us information to determine if the users of the site represent those who are likely to be interested in and qualified for the job you have available.

    • 2

Prioritize the sites that are most appropriate for you. There are literally thousands of places that you could post your advertisement and potentially just as many where you shouldn't. While posting on multiple job sites can be cost-effective, the time spent posting and reviewing applications can be costly.

    • 3

Choose the appropriate categories for your job posting. Think of the different titles that job seekers might use to find a job like this one. Post your job under as many categories as you can to ensure that you're capturing the attention of those that are right for the position. Be accurate and don't describe the position as a management job when it is a coordinator position that does not involve managing other employees.

    • 4

Write a headline that will attract your desired candidates. The goal of any advertisement is to attract attention. Show in the headline an immediate message to your target audience about what's in it for them. The headline should include important benefits about the position and/or your company.

    • 5

Describe in the job posting all requirements for the job, including job responsibilities, how to apply, and how to contact you. If you want applicants to apply via your website, say so and include the correct URL.

Tips & Warnings

  • Your job posting should be consistent with your company image. Consult with your communication department to ensure that you're following company guidelines.

  • Follow the guidelines and requirements of each site on which you are posting the advertisement.

  • Review the other types of postings that you will be competing with. Study how other employers are attempting to attract candidates.

  • Don't over promise. Make sure your advertisement is an accurate reflection of the position and the company.
