There are many types of high speed Internet, other than DSL.

Although you might think that DSL is your fastest path to the Internet, there are actually several other types of high speed Internet that will have speeds that are just the same, or even quicker, than your local DSL. DSL comes through the phone lines, and phone lines can be slower than other types of information lines.

1. Use your phone book or online white pages to search for local companies that provide cable, broadband, wireless or satellite Internet. All of these types of Internet are just as fast as DSL Internet, if not faster. Broadband is usually the same speed as DSL, but in most markets, cable, wireless and satellite Internet are faster than DSL or broadband.

2. Check with each of the companies to determine the number of bytes per second, or kilobytes per second, that their Internet service offers. Also ask about the price for Internet. Be aware that most companies will have several different price ranges for different speeds of Internet.

3. Choose the Internet package that makes the most sense to you. Typically, it will be one that has faster connection speeds but a lower price. You might also choose high speed Internet that isn't DSL based upon other factors, like web space available, email addresses, 24-hour live help, special deals or promotions, or overall satisfaction with the particular Internet service provider.
