How to Become a Certified Spanish Translator

Spanish translation can be a rewarding career.

Becoming a certified translator is not required of all translators in the United States. However, certification shows potential employers that individuals meet very specific educational and professional standards. Some companies or employers will require certification of all translators, even those who are fluent speakers in both English and Spanish. As a result, many translators choose to become certified through the American Translators Association.

Instructions

1. Provide proof of eligibility. Eligibility requirements for Spanish translators include either having at least a four-year degree in the Spanish language and at least two years of experience in translation work, or five years of translation work for those without a degree. Individuals who have certification in other countries can also apply. Send the proof of eligibility to the American Translators Association at the address listed at the bottom of the eligibility paperwork found on the website.

2. Become a member of the ATA, or American Translators Association. The ATA requires that all translators become a member for at least one month before they are allowed to take the certification test. Go to the website and click on "Application to join," fill in the requested information and wait until it is approved.

3. Apply to take the certification exam. This can be done online through the ATA website. There is a fee to take the exam of $300 as of May 2010, which should be paid at least two weeks before the exam. Late fees of $45 extra can allow those who send the money and application late to take the exam, provided there is space available.

4. Take the exam. Certification is awarded to those who take the Spanish Certification exam and pass. The exam is given at locations specified on the website. Upcoming exam locations can be found on the website under the certification information and the subtitle of "Certification Exam."
