How to Deep Clean Vinyl Flooring

Vinyl is a durable, yet inexpensive flooring option that is commonly found in kitchens and bathrooms. Just like any other flooring material, vinyl must be cleaned regularly. A dirty vinyl floor is unsightly and makes then entire room look unclean. While water and a little soap is all that is needed for light cleaning, stronger products are necessary for deep cleaning vinyl floors. You should deep clean vinyl flooring once a month, or when the floor is really dirty.

Things You'll Need

  • Broom or vacuum cleaner
  • Bucket
  • Water
  • ½ cup household ammonia
  • Sponge mop or rag mop
  • Sweep the floor with a broom or vacuum cleaner to remove loose dust, dirt and debris. If using a vacuum cleaner, make sure it has a hard floor setting or a soft brush attachment.

  • Fill a bucket with 1 qt. lukewarm water. Add ½ cup of household ammonia.

  • Dip a sponge or rag mop into the cleaning solution. Wring out the mop well.

  • Mop the floor with the cleaning solution using a circular motion. Overlap your mop strokes to ensure no part of the floor is missed during cleaning. Rinse and wring out the mop often.

  • Discard the cleaning solution from the bucket once the floor has been mopped. Rinse out the bucket well and fill it with plain water. Rinse out the mop as well to remove any traces of the cleaning solution.

  • Rinse the floor with the mop and plain water to remove any residue left behind. Let the floor air-dry thoroughly.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use an old toothbrush to clean hard-to-reach spots on your vinyl floor.
  • If the floor is really dirty and the mop is not working to remove the dirt and grime, scrub the floor with the cleaning solution and a soft bristled scrub brush.
  • Work in a well-ventilated area when using ammonia. Wear rubber gloves to prevent skin irritation.
