How to Take Care of a Dachshund

How to Take Care of a Dachshund thumbnail
Good care will give your dachshund a long life

Dachshunds are loyal, loving dogs that were originally bred to hunt badgers and later bred to be smaller to hunt smaller animals. Because its need for exercise is minimal compared to other breeds, the dachshund is well suited for life in an apartment. Dachshunds are prone to back and spine problems due to their lengthy back, but with proper care your dachshund will be your companion for many years. Dachshunds also do well with children although older children are preferable.

Instructions

    • 1

Feed your dachshund daily with a dry dog food that is high in protein. Wet food is to be given as a treat since the daily consumption of hard food will improve the health of your dogs teeth. The amount fed depends on the dog's energy level, if your dachshund has a tapering of the waist below the ribs without the ribs plainly visible, it is at a healthy weight.

    • 2

Groom your dachshund weekly. Use a soft bristled brush on a smooth coat to remove excess dirt and leave the coat shiny. Use a brush with hard bristles on a long-haired dachshund to remove tangles. Clip the nails when needed with guillotine type nail clippers. Cut the nail right below the curve, being careful not to cut into the quick.

    • 3

Socialize your dachshund well by taking it out in public and allowing it to meet new people. Dachshunds that are sheltered and only socialized to a few select people, can develop aggression toward visitors.

    • 4

Examine its ears periodically. A dachshund's droopy ears are likely to hold in moisture that leads to fungus or infection. Clean the inside of the ears gently with a cotton ball dampened with warm water.

    • 5

Vaccinate your dachshund to protect its health. Schedule yearly visits to a veterinarian to monitor health and catch any problems before they are more serious.

    • 6

Exercise your dachshund daily to prevent obesity, which is quite common in this breed. Walk several times a day, or play vigorously for at least an hour.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use caution when handling your dachshund to prevent injury to its back. Watch it carefully when walking around people since it is low to the ground and easily stepped on. Provide plenty of fresh water at all times
