Instructions

  1. Insulate your basement

    • 1

Plan your project by measuring your basement. Take these figures and figure out how many wooden 2 by 4 boards and how much fiberglass insulation you will need to cover the area. Alternatively, ask a sales associate at a building supply store to do the calculation for you. When buying insulation, buy the best quality you can afford. Insulation comes in variable degrees of blocking power.

Nip moisture problems by applying a coat of waterproofing paint to the walls. Any reputable paint, hardware or building supply store sells waterproofing paint.

    • 3

Protect yourself. The process for placing installation can be dangerous. Put on a dust mask and some gloves to minimize safety hazards.

    • 4

Use concrete nails to attach wooden studs to your basement wall. Space these far enough apart to allow the insulation material to go between them, typically 16 inches. Use a sharp knife to cut the insulation. Position the insulation between the studs. Most fiberglass insulation has paper backing with flaps that extend beyond the fiberglass. Staple these flaps to secure the fiberglass in place. Be cautious during this process. In the event of tears or seams you can use duct tape to patch your work.
