How to Make Pilgrim Hats

Make cute little pilgrim hats for boys and girls.

Making pilgrim hats can be a fun and entertaining project for both boys and girls. These simple pilgrim hats can be constructed in just a few minutes using basic craft supplies and a couple sheets of paper. Traditionally there is a white pilgrim bonnet-type hat for girls and a black hat for boys.

Things You'll Need

• Tape
• Pencil
• Safety scissors
• Yarn
• Glue
• 1 sheet white paper 12 by 18 inches (girls)
• 1 sheet black paper 12 by 12 inches (boys)
• 1 sheet black paper 4 by 18 inches (boys)
• 1 sheet yellow paper (boys)

Instructions

Girls

1. Lay the sheet of white paper on a flat surface. Use a ruler to measure 3 inches out from one of the 18-inch sides.

2. Lightly draw a straight line with a pencil at the 3-inch mark across the sheet to the other end.

3. Fold the sheet of paper along the line, so that 3 inches of paper fold underneath the rest of the paper's surface.

4. Erase the line with a pencil eraser.

5. Use a pair of scissors to cut two slits along the unfolded 18-inch side of the sheet, leaving 6 inches of space in between each cut. Make the actual cuts go about 5 or 6 inches down from the top of the sheet. This sections off the top of the sheet into three sections.

6. Make the crown of the pilgrim's hat by folding the section on the upper left over onto the middle section right next to it. Tape or glue this into place, and then fold the remaining section on the right over the two attaching parts. Tape or glue this into place.

7. Use a hole-punch to punch a hole on the left and right side of the hat, under the newly-formed flaps.

8. Use the yarn to tie the hat underneath the chin.

Boys

1. Use a pair of scissors and cut a 3-inch circle from the black 12 by 12-inch sheet of paper.

2. Roll the black 4 by 18 sheet of paper into a tube that will fit on top of the 12 by 12 sheet of paper. This will be used as the crown of the pilgrim hat. Tape the tube into place so it stays in tube formation.

3. Position the tube on top of the 3-inch circular hole that's been cut in the 12 by 12 sheet of paper. Make sure that all the edges are matching up with each other, then tape the tube onto the 12 by 12 paper.

4. Cut a little buckle out of the yellow sheet of paper, then tape or glue it onto the crown piece of the hat.
