How to Use Diamox for Seahorses

How to Use Diamox for Seahorses thumbnail
Seahorses can't eat when they have gas bubble disease.

Use Diamox to cure gas bubble disease in aquatic mammals such as seahorses. Oversaturation of dissolved nitrogen gas in the water causes gas bubble disease, according to the Fish Junkies website. Fatal cases can occur due to pump or filter failure, excessive aeration or increased temperature. Gas bubble disease is similar to when a scuba diver ascends too fast and the change in pressure is too much to handle. Using the veterinarian-prescribed medication Diamox can help cure seahorses with gas bubble disease, if used properly.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour 1 gallon of seawater into a 3-gallon tank to make a hospital tank.

    • 2

Position a heater, chiller and hitching post into the tank. Create water movement by placing an airline in the tank. Don't use a filter.

    • 3

Crush and add the Diamox. Add one-eighth of a tablet if your seahorse is 3.2 inches or smaller. Add one-fourth of a tablet if your seahorse is 3.2 to 4.8 inches long. Add one-half of a tablet if your seahorse is 4.8 to 8 inches long. Lastly, add one tablet if your seahorse is 8 to 12 inches long.

    • 4

Put the seahorse in the hospital tank. Leave it in there for 24 hours.

    • 5

Take the seahorse out of the hospital tank. Put the seahorse in a holding container and change the hospital tank's water. Place the seahorse back into the hospital tank for another 24 hours.

    • 6

Take the seahorse out. Change the tank's water for a third time. Place the seahorse in the hospital tank and leave it there for 24 more hours.

    • 7

Clean your original fish tank. Place your seahorse in the original fish tank and monitor it closely.

Tips & Warnings

  • Purchase your hospital tank, seawater, heater, chiller, airline and hitching post at an animal store. A local fish or aquatic store will carry these items as well.
