How to Clear a Driving Record in Utah

Too many points on your driving record can cause your license to be revoked.

Utah's Department of Public Safety uses a point system to track violations on your driving record. Each type of violation has a corresponding point value, ranging from 35 points for a minor speeding ticket to 80 points for reckless driving. If you collect too many points on your license, you may have your license suspended or revoked. Removing points from your license can take up to three years, but there are ways you can cut that time and have your point balance cleared in less than half the time.

Take the National Safety Council's defensive driving course to remove 50 points from your record. The fee for registration is $40. Online information and registration is available on the Utah Safety Council website. You can only use this course to remove points once every three years. Some counties will not allow you to drop points by taking this course, such as Washington county. Check your county's website for more information.

Avoid any other driving citations. The Utah DMV will drop half of the points on your driving record after one year without an infraction, and will completely remove all points after two years of citation-free driving. If you do receive a ticket during this time, points collected on your license will drop off three years after the date of the infraction.

Tips & Warnings

  • The best way to keep points off your driving record is to obey all traffic laws.

  • The consequences of some driving offenses are worse than accumulating points on your record, such as driving under the influence or vehicular manslaughter. Please use caution when driving, and never, under any circumstances, drink and drive.
